What Is an IP Location Lookup?
An IP location lookup takes an IP address and checks it against a geolocation database: a large table that maps ranges of IP addresses to the places they are registered and routed. Those databases are built from regional registry records, network routing data, and provider-submitted information, so a lookup tells you where an address block lives on the internet, not where a person is standing.
That distinction matters more than anything else on this page. Address blocks are handed out by regional registries, such as ARIN, the registry that assigns IP blocks in North America, drawing from the global pool coordinated by IANA, which allocates global IP address space. A geolocation lookup reads that paper trail. It is an informed estimate, not a GPS fix.
How to Look Up an IP Address Location

What Each Field Means
Most lookup tools show you a wall of values and explain none of them. Here is what each field in your results actually tells you, and how much weight to put on it.
City and Region
The city and region (state or province) where the address block is registered or routed. This is the least reliable part of any lookup. It is often correct for fixed home and office connections, and often wrong for mobile networks and large providers. Treat it as a strong hint rather than a fact.
Country and Country Code
The country the address is registered in, with its two-letter code. This is the most reliable field you will get. Country-level geolocation is accurate the overwhelming majority of the time, which is why services use it for language, currency, and content decisions.
ZIP Code
The postal code associated with the registered location. Read this one carefully: it usually reflects the provider’s facility or the center of a service area, not the neighborhood of the person using the connection. A ZIP that looks wrong is normal and expected.
Latitude and Longitude
The coordinates of the registered location, shown as numbers. These are almost always the center point of a city or service area rather than a precise position, so a lookup that returns coordinates is pointing at a general area, not an address. Two different connections in the same city commonly return identical coordinates.
Time Zone
The time zone for the registered location. This is one of the more practical fields: it helps when correlating server log timestamps, scheduling around a hosting region, or sanity-checking whether traffic timing matches the claimed location.
ISP / Organization
The organization that owns the address block. The label covers both words on purpose, because the underlying record is an organization name and the two are not always the same thing. For a home connection it is usually the internet service provider. For a server it is often a hosting company or cloud provider, which is a quick way to tell whether traffic is coming from a residential connection or a data center. How Accurate Is IP Geolocation?
Country level is reliable. City level is an estimate. That is the honest summary, and it is worth understanding why the gap exists, because several things routinely push the result away from the truth.
Mobile carriers route many users through shared gateways using a technique called CGNAT, which can place a phone hundreds of miles from where it actually is. Large providers frequently register entire address blocks to a head office, so every customer on that block appears to be at corporate headquarters. Geolocation databases update on their own schedules, so a block that changed hands can report its old location for a while. And if the connection runs through a VPN or proxy, the lookup returns the exit server’s location, which is the whole point of using one.
We should also be straight about our own tool: it queries a single geolocation source. Some paid services cross-reference several databases and reconcile the differences. That extra step can improve city-level guesses, but it does not change the underlying limitation. Whatever tool you use, treat an IP location as an estimate and not as evidence.
What You Can and Cannot Learn From an IP Address
You can learn the approximate city and the country with reasonable confidence, the ISP or hosting provider that owns the block, the local time zone, and whether the address belongs to a residential network or a data center. That last one is genuinely useful: an address registered to a cloud provider usually means automated traffic rather than a person browsing.
You cannot learn a name, a street address, a household, or a device. An IP address identifies a connection point on a network, not a person, and connecting one to an individual requires records held by the provider, which are released only through legal process. Common Reasons to Look Up an IP Address
- Checking where a server is hosted. Confirm the region a site, API, or mail server actually runs in, which affects latency and compliance.
- Reading server logs. Turn a column of raw addresses into countries and providers so unusual traffic stands out.
- Verifying a VPN. Confirm your VPN is presenting the country you selected rather than leaking your real one.
- Diagnosing wrong-region content. If a site keeps serving the wrong language, currency, or store, the geolocation of your address is usually the reason.
