What Is a Reverse Text Generator?

Quick answer: A reverse text generator writes your text backwards, last character first, so Hello World becomes dlroW olleH. It's also called a backwards text generator or text reverser. Type or paste your text above, pick a tile, and press Generate.

How to Reverse Text Online

To reverse text online, skip step two: the first tile is already selected.

  1. Add your text. Paste or type it into the top text box, above the tiles on a phone.
  2. Pick a tile. Choose another only for word order or each word's letters.
  3. Press Generate. The page reloads at the top, so scroll down to the result box.
  4. Copy or save. Copy to Clipboard and Save as TXT appear with a result, and the saved file is UTF-8.

Tip: Before you write text backwards, paste a short sample and compare the tiles.

What Each Reverse Text Tile Does

Five tiles give three different results.

TileWhat it doesExample (Hello World)
Reverse TextReverses every character and flips line orderdlroW olleH
Flip TextSame result as Reverse TextdlroW olleH
Reverse WordReverses word order, punctuation stays attachedWorld Hello
Flip WordingSame result as Reverse WordWorld Hello
Reverse Each Word's LettersReverses letters in each wordolleH dlroW

The word tiles leave spaces, tabs and line breaks in place. Try each tile with Hello world on one line and foo bar on the next: Reverse Word returns bar foo above world Hello, and the fifth tile returns olleH dlrow above oof rab.

Reverse Text vs Mirror Text and Upside Down Text

Reversing dog gives god: the order changes, not the letter shapes. Mirror writing and upside down text change both. For that look, use the Small Text Generator: its Upside Down tile swaps letters for upside down lookalikes and writes the line from its last character to its first, which turns Hello World 123 into 321 pןɹoʍ oןןǝɥ.

Reversing Emoji, Accents and Other Alphabets

The first, second and fifth tiles reverse code points (the numbers Unicode gives characters), not grapheme clusters (what a reader sees as one character). One Unicode emoji can be several code points.

  • The red heart and the sun can lose their emoji look.
  • A combining accent (a separate accent mark) lands on the wrong letter, and so do the vowel marks of Hindi, Thai and pointed Hebrew and Arabic.
  • A skin tone swatch jumps ahead of its hand, and the US flag turns into SU.
  • Reverse Word only moves whole words, so it keeps all of these intact.

Word Limit and Refused Pastes

The word limit is 50 words as a guest and 100 with a free account, counted by splitting on spaces, tabs and line breaks.

  • Go over it and the page reloads with an empty result box and an error message that stays until you close it.
  • Your text stays in the top box, but the tile resets to Reverse Text, so pick it again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) is a list of common questions and answers provided to quickly address common concerns or inquiries.

How do I reverse word order, or reverse each word?

To reverse words in a sentence, pick Reverse Word: 'Hi, Sam. How are you?' becomes 'you? are How Sam. Hi,' with punctuation kept attached. To reverse the letters in each word instead, pick Reverse Each Word's Letters: the same sentence becomes ',iH .maS woH era ?uoy'.

What is the difference between backwards, mirrored and upside down text?

Backwards text changes only the character order. Mirrored text swaps letters for flipped lookalikes, and upside down text turns them over, so both change the letter shapes. This tool changes the order only, and Flip Text, despite its name, repeats Reverse Text.

Does reversing text work with emojis and special characters?

Partly. Emoji such as the smiley face, precomposed accents such as é, Cyrillic, Chinese and Korean reverse correctly. The red heart can lose its emoji look, a flag swaps its letters, and a separate accent mark or Hindi and Thai vowel marks land on the wrong letter. Reverse Word never touches a character, so pick it for those.

Can I use a reverse text generator to check a palindrome?

Yes. Reverse the text and compare it with what you typed. Case, spaces and punctuation travel with their characters, so Racecar returns racecaR, a palindrome that fails the eyeball test. Use one case, letters only, such as amanaplanacanalpanama, and the output matches.

Is the reverse text generator free, and is there a limit?

Free. Guests can paste 50 words, and a free account raises that to 100. For longer text on one line, split it at a space, run each part and join them with a space: last part first for Reverse Text and Reverse Word, original order for the fifth tile.

Does it keep my line breaks, and can I reverse each line separately?

Yes on the word tiles: every line break stays put, though Reverse Word still moves words between lines. There is no per line option. Reverse Text reverses the whole text, so the last line comes out first. Paste one line at a time.
