How to Fix

The short version, the same steps you see when you click How to Fix in your report.

Why this fails: The page has no link whose address contains facebook.com, twitter.com, linkedin.com, instagram.com, youtube.com, tiktok.com or pinterest.com. The result is an amber warning, not a red fail, and a warning doesn't add to your score.

How to fix it:

  1. Copy the full https profile address of each account you actually run.
  2. Add an anchor for each one to your footer template, so every page carries the same row.
  3. Give icon-only links an aria-label such as Instagram, so screen readers announce a name instead of a URL.
  4. Avoid relying on a widget that injects icons late or inside an iframe, because the check reads only anchors present when the page loads.
  5. Remember that the check doesn't recognise x.com addresses, so include at least one of the seven listed networks.
HTML
<nav aria-label="Social media">
  <a href="https://www.instagram.com/yourbrand/" aria-label="Instagram" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
    <svg aria-hidden="true"><use href="#instagram"/></svg>
  </a>
  <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourbrand" aria-label="LinkedIn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
    <svg aria-hidden="true"><use href="#linkedin"/></svg>
  </a>
  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@yourbrand" aria-label="YouTube" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
    <svg aria-hidden="true"><use href="#youtube"/></svg>
  </a>
</nav>

Shortcuts for common platforms:

  • WordPress: add the Social Icons block to the footer in Appearance, then Editor.
  • Shopify: fill in the Social media fields under Customize, then Theme settings.
  • Wix: place the social bar element in the footer.
  • Squarespace: add your accounts in the Social Links panel, then show them with a Social Links block or the header and footer social icons.
  • Static site: edit the shared footer include.

Re-test: Run the free SEO report again and open the Social Media Presence card. It should show a green check with a count badge for each network found. If it still warns, view the page source and search for the seven domain strings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are social media links on a website?
They are plain anchor links, usually icons in the footer or header, that send visitors to your profiles on networks such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. A profile link opens your account, a share button posts the page being read, and a feed embed shows content in a frame. Our report checks only for the first kind.
Where should I put social media links on my website?
Put them in the footer first, because it sits on every page and keeps the header clean. Add them to the contact page and author bios when trust matters, and keep share buttons next to the article. Limit the icons to networks you really post on, and leave a gap so phone users tap the right one.
How do I add social media links to my website?
Copy each profile URL, then add anchor tags to the footer template, or use your builder's social icons block or theme settings. Give icon-only links an aria-label so screen readers announce the network. Then run the free report again and confirm the Social Media Presence card shows a green check.
Do social media links help SEO?
Not directly. Google does not document social links or follower counts as ranking inputs, and a link from your site to a profile is an ordinary outbound link. The value is indirect: visitors find your profiles, the site looks active and cared for, and sameAs markup can point search engines to your official profile pages.
Should social media links open in a new tab?
Usually yes for profile links, so the visitor keeps your page open. Use target _blank, which modern browsers already treat like noopener, and add rel noopener noreferrer as a habit for older browsers. Search engines do not need nofollow on your own profile links.
What is the difference between social media links and share buttons?
Profile links send people to your accounts so they can follow you, while share buttons send the current page to a network so a visitor can post it. Compare facebook.com/yourbrand, which is a profile, with facebook.com/sharer, which is a share address. Our check counts both, because it only looks for a network domain inside the link.
Which social media platforms should I link to?
Link the networks your audience uses and you actually keep up. LinkedIn suits B2B, Instagram or Pinterest suit visual products, and YouTube fits anyone publishing video. Our report recognises seven networks: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest, so keep at least one of them as a visible link.
