What Is a Small Text Generator?

Quick answer: A small text generator swaps each letter you type for a tiny lookalike character from Unicode. The result is ordinary text you can copy and paste, not a smaller font size. Ours makes Small Text and Small Caps. Try it with your own text in the tool above.

The tool has six styles. Small Text and Small Caps are the small ones, which makes it a small caps generator too, and Upside Down, Bold, Bubble and Backwards are decorative swaps. There is no subscript style.

How to Make Small Text (Tiny Letters You Can Copy and Paste)

Five steps, and the third one matters most: typing alone converts nothing.

  1. Type or paste your text. Click the first box ("Write some text here ..."). A run takes up to 50 words, counted as words separated by spaces, and a free account raises that to 100.
  2. Pick a style. Small Text gives raised letters like ʰᵉˡˡᵒ and flattens capitals. Small Caps gives capital shapes at lowercase height, like Hᴇʟʟᴏ, and keeps typed capitals full size.
  3. Press Generate. The page reloads, the result lands in the second box, and your style stays selected.
  4. Copy or save the result. Press Copy to Clipboard, or press Save as TXT to download small-text-generator.txt as UTF-8. Both appear after the first result.
  5. Check it where you will use it. Paste one short line into the real field first, because some fields rewrite these characters.

Gotcha: Click Small Caps after a result and nothing changes until you press Generate again. Convert a test line in the tool above.

Every row below is real output from this small text generator for Hello World 123, so copy the results rather than retyping them.

StyleResultWhat changed
Small Textʰᵉˡˡᵒ ʷᵒʳˡᵈ ¹²³Raised letters and superscript digits.
Small CapsHᴇʟʟᴏ Wᴏʀʟᴅ 123Lowercase became small capitals. Typed H, W and digits stayed.
Upside Downɥǝןןo ʍoɹןp 123Flipped lookalikes. The typed l became a Hebrew final nun.
Bold𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝟏𝟐𝟑Unicode mathematical bold, not a font weight.
BubbleⒽⓔⓛⓛⓞ Ⓦⓞⓡⓛⓓ ①②③Circled letters and digits 1 to 9. The 0 stays.
BackwardsHɘllo Woᴙlb ߁23Some letters mirrored, d became b, and 1 became an N'Ko digit, which displays after the 23.

Upside Down and Backwards keep the original character order, so the line is not reversed. For true reversal, use the Reverse Text Generator. Then type your own sentence into the tool.

Small Text, Superscript, Subscript and Small Caps: What Is the Difference?

Four names get mixed up, and subscript is the one we lack.

  • Superscript. Sits above the baseline, as in x² or the st of an ordinal like 1st.
  • Subscript. Sits below the baseline, as in the 2 of H₂O.
  • Small caps. Capital letters at lowercase height, a typographic style.
  • Tiny text. A common name for any of the three, here meaning Unicode characters, not a font.

Small Text works as a superscript generator, and Unicode mostly files its letters as modifier letters (MODIFIER LETTER SMALL A, for example). Small Caps makes small capitals. With no subscript style, H2O through Small Text comes out as ʰ²ᵒ, raised and wrong for a chemical formula.

Raised and lowered letters were encoded mainly for phonetic notation, so the sets are uneven, as the Unicode subscripts and superscripts table shows. The Unicode small capitals reference adds that small capitals are deprecated as a stand-in for real small cap formatting, so our Small Caps style is a workaround.

ASCII is a 128 character set with no raised or small capital letters, so this tool uses Unicode. For ASCII codes, try the Text to ASCII converter.

Which Letters and Symbols Convert (and Which Stay Normal Size)

Two styles have quirks worth a table, punctuation included.

StyleConvertedStays as typedWatch out
Small Texta to z, 0 to 9, ( ) =, exclamation and question marks, ; $ % & *+ . , : quotes, [ ] { } < > / \ | @ # ^ ~ and the backtickCase is lost. q becomes ᑫ and a typed capital Q becomes ᵠ, two different lookalike characters, neither a true raised q. Hyphen and underscore both become ⁻.
Small CapsLowercase letters a to z except q, s and x (23 letters)Typed capitals, digits, q, s and xpassword comes out as ᴘᴀssᴡᴏʀᴅ, with two full size s. Punctuation follows the Small Text map, so exclamation marks, ? ; $ % & * = and hyphens, underscores and parentheses are swapped too: x-ray (test) becomes x⁻ʀᴀʏ ⁽ᴛᴇsᴛ⁾.

Each style is a lookup table, and characters with no entry are copied as typed: accented letters, other alphabets, emoji. No message says what was skipped. In Small Text, café naïve 日本語 becomes ᶜᵃᶠé ⁿᵃïᵛᵉ 日本語.

The missing letters in Small Caps are partly our doing. Unicode defines small capitals for s and q, which makes leaving them full size a hole in our character mapping. Only x has none anywhere.

Where to Use Tiny Text and Where It Breaks

Tiny letters only help if the string survives the paste.

  • Good fits. Display names, bio lines, captions, comments and chat messages that accept special characters, plus exponent or footnote marks.
  • What we verified. In one Chromium test the clipboard held exactly the converted string and the TXT file was plain UTF-8. Converted characters take 2 to 4 bytes instead of 1 (ʰ is 2, ᵃ is 3, 𝐇 is 4), so a 31 character Small Text line came to 68 bytes.
  • Where it breaks. Some fields refuse or rewrite special characters, especially username and gamer tag fields. With no glyph, a font draws an empty box unless font fallback borrows one elsewhere. Unicode normalization (NFKC), a cleanup step some software applies, folds most Small Text, Bold and Bubble characters back to plain letters and leaves the Small Caps letters alone. Backwards and Upside Down borrow right to left characters, so nearby digits can shift.

Limits to Know Before You Paste

Four limits come with the territory, and the last is ours.

  • Screen readers. A screen reader may read the characters by name, spell them out or skip them, and we have tested none. For accessibility, keep contact details, prices and instructions in normal text.
  • Search. A search for the plain word may not find converted text. Keep titles, headings and URLs in normal text, and check your title tag with the meta tag analyzer.
  • Bold is a mathematical alphabet. Per the Unicode Standard, chapter 22, characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block "should not be used to represent styling of nonmathematical text." Keep Bold to a few words. For superscripts the Standard prefers markup in rich text, so tiny letters in plain text are a workaround.
  • Readability. Our opinion, not a Unicode rule: tiny letters are hard to read, so keep a caption to a line or two.
  • Tool limits. The word limit is 50 per run, or 100 with a free account, and longer text is refused, not trimmed. You get one style at a time.

How Your Text Is Processed

It is free, with nothing to install. You can convert 50 words per run without an account, or 100 with a free one.

This small text converter runs on our server, not in the page. Pressing Generate sends your text to us and reloads the page with the result. Do not paste anything confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) is a list of common questions and answers provided to quickly address common concerns or inquiries.

How do I make small text?

Type or paste into the first box, choose a style and press Generate, because nothing converts until you do. Press Copy to Clipboard and paste. A run takes up to 50 words, or 100 with a free account. Try it above.

Is small text a font?

No. People call it a tiny font or small font, but every tiny letter is a separate Unicode character, so it survives copy and paste where you have no font controls. A font can't travel inside plain text, so looks vary by device.

What is the difference between small text, superscript, subscript and small caps?

Superscript is raised, subscript is lowered, and small caps are capital shapes at lowercase height. Small Text makes superscript letters and Small Caps makes small capitals. There is no subscript style here, so H2O in Small Text comes out raised as ʰ²ᵒ.

Why do some letters stay full size after I convert?

Small Caps leaves q, s and x at full size. Unicode has small capitals for s and q, but our map skips them, so those two are our gap, while x has none anywhere. Accented letters and emoji also pass through unchanged.

Does small text work on Instagram, Discord and TikTok?

It pastes wherever a text field accepts special characters, but we have not tested any individual app, so we make no promise for any of them. Some fields rewrite these characters, usernames especially, so paste a short test line first.

Why does my small text show up as empty boxes?

The font on that device or app has no glyph for the character, so it draws an empty box, sometimes called tofu. Try another style, since each one uses different Unicode characters, or paste the text somewhere with a different font.

Can screen readers and search engines read small text?

They may, but do not rely on it. A screen reader may read the characters by name, spell them out or skip them, and a search for the plain word may not match converted text. Keep titles and headings in normal text.

How much text can I convert at once?

Up to 50 words per run without an account and 100 with a free account, where a word is anything between spaces or line breaks. A 51 word paste is refused, not trimmed, so split it into batches. Each run converts one style.

Is the small text generator free to use?

Yes, it is free, with nothing to install and no account needed for up to 50 words per run. Pick one of six styles, press Generate and copy the result with Copy to Clipboard. A free account raises the cap to 100 words.
