Free Online Text Editor

Write and format your text, then download it as a PDF. Free, with no sign-up needed.

Adding pictures needs a free account. Text, tables, colors and links work without one.

What Is an Online Text Editor?

Quick answer: An online text editor lets you write and format text in a browser tab with nothing to install. This free online text editor turns your text into a PDF when you press Download, so start typing in the editor above.

Underneath, it is a rich text editor: the box holds formatted HTML and a PDF library draws it.

How to Write and Save Text as a PDF

Text to PDF takes four steps, the same for meeting notes, drafts and letters.

  1. Write or paste. Click the box that says "Write some text here ..." and type or paste text. Some Markdown shortcuts work: two hashes and a space start a Heading 2.
  2. Format. Most toolbar choices reach the PDF, and the table below lists the ones that do not.
  3. Press Download. The button posts your text to our server, which builds the PDF and returns online-text-editor.pdf.
  4. Open the PDF. You get selectable text and clickable links. Rename each copy: the file name never changes.

Type first: an empty box gets the message "The editor is empty" and no file.

What You Can Do in This Online Rich Text Editor

The toolbar is CKEditor 5, a visual WYSIWYG editor. Most controls reach the PDF.

  • Text and fonts. Heading dropdown, Bold, Italic, Link, Block quote, Font Family, Font Size, Font Color and Highlight.
  • Lists and alignment. Bulleted List and Numbered List have style menus, and Text alignment includes Justify.
  • Inserts. Insert table, Code, Insert code block, Horizontal line, Special characters and Source, the HTML source view.
  • Gaps. Underline, strikethrough, undo and redo have no button, and Ctrl+U does nothing. Ctrl+Z still undoes.
  • More shortcuts. The CKEditor autoformat shortcuts page lists more than this build enables, such as to-do lists.
  • Capitalization. The editor cannot change case. Use the case converter first.

The PDF comes from dompdf, a PHP library. Its standard fonts cover only the Windows ANSI character set, so any other character switches the file to the DejaVu fonts. dompdf's notes on fonts and character encoding explain why.

What the PDF Looks Like

Every file is A4 portrait (210 by 297 mm), taller and narrower than US Letter, as the A4 and US Letter paper sizes article shows.

Body text is 12 pt with a 12 mm left margin: Times for Latin-only files, DejaVu Sans otherwise. Latin-only files leave fonts unembedded, so each viewer supplies its own.

Limits to Know Before You Start

Four limits trip up first-time users.

  • No autosave. Reload or close the tab and the box is empty, with no warning.
  • Numbered lists. The editing box cuts off the numbers, but the PDF numbers the lines correctly.
  • Also missing. Word counter, find and replace, page numbers, page breaks, paper size choice.
  • One output. A PDF, not a TXT, DOCX or HTML file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) is a list of common questions and answers provided to quickly address common concerns or inquiries.

Is an online text editor the same as a word processor or a plain notepad?

No, it sits between the two. A plain text editor holds only characters, while a word processor adds layout. This text editor with PDF download takes rich text (headings, bold, lists, links) and returns a PDF, which suits essays and handouts.

Can I use this online text editor without signing up?

Yes. You can edit text online as a guest, with nothing to install. Type or paste, format the text and press Download. None of those steps asks you to sign in or create an account, and the site is free to use.

How do I save text as a PDF?

To save text as PDF, write or paste in the editor, format it, press Download and open online-text-editor.pdf. Type something first, because an empty editor shows a warning instead of a file. Every download has the same name, so rename each copy.

Does the editor save my work automatically?

No. The box starts empty on every visit, so reloading or closing the tab clears it, with no warning. Press Download before you leave, or copy the text into a document of your own. A PDF cannot be reopened here.

Why do some letters and symbols turn into question marks in my PDF?

Mostly they no longer do. Times, Helvetica and Courier cover only the Windows ANSI character set, so the PDF switches to DejaVu Sans, plus a CJK face, when a document needs more. Cyrillic, Greek, Czech and all 44 Special characters print. Question marks remain inside Code and Code block, which stay Courier.

Does my formatting carry over into the PDF?

Almost all of it. Headings, bold, italic, lists, links, quotes, alignment, font size, font colors, highlight markers and table borders arrive. Font Family collapses to three faces and Insert media is dropped. The table under What Carries Over Into the PDF has the full list.

Is there a limit on how long my document can be?

Yes. The editor refuses a document above about 3 MB of HTML. As of October 2026, tens of thousands of words split into paragraphs came back in a few seconds in our tests, but one unbroken 40,000 word paragraph took more than two minutes. Press Enter now and then.
