How to Convert Markdown to Word

The form sends your text to our server, Pandoc runs once, and the page that comes back carries the file.

1. Add your Markdown. Use the 'Upload a Markdown file' field for one .md, .markdown or .txt file (3 MB without an account, 10 MB with a free one), or type into the 'Or paste your Markdown' box (400,000 characters). Fill in both and the upload wins.
2. Press Convert to Word (DOCX). In our tests a 1,000 word file took 0.7 seconds and a 20,000 word one 1.8, so small documents land in about a second.
3. Check the result row. A Result card shows File Name, Size in KB and a Download button. The name is a lowercase, hyphenated version of your file name, so Q3 Report.md becomes q3-report.docx, and pasted text becomes document.docx.
4. Download. Press Download before you reload, because the result card lives only on that page load. The reload icon, tooltip Convert More Files, starts the next document.

Markdown to DOCX: What Each Element Becomes in Word

Pandoc reads GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) and writes most elements as native Word features inside a DOCX (Office Open XML) file, a zip of XML parts. The GitHub Flavored Markdown spec defines it as a superset of CommonMark. Strikethrough, hard line breaks and emoji shortcodes such as :tada: convert too.

We read the output in LibreOffice Writer and with python-docx, not in Word, so paste your own document and check these rows.

What Does Not Survive the Conversion

Anything the Word writer cannot place is skipped, and this page does not warn you.

• Raw HTML blocks are dropped, text included. The gfm reader stores HTML as raw nodes and the Word writer ignores them, so a centered heading or an HTML table vanishes with its words. In our README-style test a details summary vanished too, while the Markdown paragraphs around the HTML stayed. Rewrite them as a # heading or a pipe table.
• Inline tags lose their style, not their words. The kbd, sub, sup and u tags come through as plain text, so H2O arrives with a flat 2. A br tag is dropped wherever it sits, so line1 and line2 became line1line2, and an img tag, the usual README logo, disappears with its alt text. Use the Markdown image syntax with a public link instead.
• Alerts and diagrams arrive plain. A GitHub alert becomes a plain line with its type (Note, Warning) and your text, with no colored box, and a Mermaid fence becomes a code block of diagram source.
• Extended syntax appears as typed. ==highlight==, ^superscript^, ~subscript~, ++inserted++, [TOC], [[wiki links]], definition lists and \newpage stay as you wrote them. Strikethrough needs two tildes: ~~text~~ converts, but ~text~ stays as typed, even though the GFM spec allows it.
• No page breaks, no contents list. Nothing forces a new page, and the converter inserts no table of contents. Microsoft's help page shows how to insert a table of contents in Word.
• Right-to-left text keeps its letters, not its direction. Arabic kept every character in our tests, but nothing is marked right-to-left, so set the direction in Word.

Images in Your Markdown: What Reaches the Word File

The address you wrote decides the outcome, because our server fetches each image first.

• Public links to PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP files are fetched and embedded. They are kept as they are, so a large photo makes a large .docx; shrink it with the image compressor first. Up to 20 images of 5 MB each are fetched.
• A path on your own computer cannot come along. The tool receives only your text, so Word keeps just the alt text. Host the picture at a public link, or insert it in Word after converting.
• Inline base64 images skip the fetch. A data: address with the picture inside embeds like any other.
• Only four picture types are embedded. A WebP goes in as a WebP picture, but we did not open one in Word. An SVG, a BMP or a non-picture file leaves only its alt text. Convert first: SVG to PNG with the SVG to PNG converter, WebP to JPEG with the JPG converter.
• Slow hosts cost time. An address that never answers is given 10 seconds, then replaced by its alt text, and image downloads stop after about 45 seconds in total; the whole conversion stops at 60.

How to Prepare Markdown for a Clean Word Document

Nothing gets fixed on the way through, so skim your source for these four things.

• Open with front matter, and quote the title. Put title, author and date lines between two lines of three dashes, and they become the title block and fill the title and author properties. A title containing a colon needs quotes: unquoted, it failed the conversion in our test.
• Keep heading levels in order. The Navigation Pane and any table of contents follow them, so do not jump from # to ###.
• Leave a blank line above every table. A table that starts right after a paragraph line does not convert: in our test the pipes arrived as text. Lists, headings and code fences forgive that, tables do not.
• Save as UTF-8. A Latin-1 file with accents still converted correctly in our test, but UTF-8 removes the doubt. Only the file extension is checked, so a file of random bytes became one junk paragraph; open the result before you send it.

Editing the Word Document After You Convert

Handing over Word means someone will edit it. Start with styles, not with selected text.

• Restyle once. Right-click Heading 1, Body Text or Source Code in the Styles gallery on the Home tab, choose Modify, and every paragraph of that kind updates. First Paragraph, Block Text and tight lists inherit from Body Text, so one change there reaches all three. The defaults are Aptos fonts, Consolas for code and teal-blue headings.
• Borders and a contents page. Tables arrive without gridlines, so pick a style from Table Design. Because the headings are real styles, a table of contents takes a few clicks.
• Review with comments and track changes. Comments and Track Changes are why reviewers ask for Word. We did not try Google Docs or Apple Pages; for Google Docs, upload the .docx to Drive, open it there and check one table and one code block.
• Send a PDF when editing ends. Make a fixed copy with the Word to PDF converter.

Limits to Know Before You Convert

Size caps first, then the one that surprises people: time.

• Size. One document at a time: 3 MB per file without an account, 10 MB with a free account, or 400,000 characters of pasted text.
• Time. Structure matters more than size. Two test files show it: 2.0 MB of ordinary paragraphs took between 8 and 13 seconds, while 1.3 MB of 30,000 tiny sections took between 29 and 33 seconds, depending on server load. Pandoc is stopped after 60 seconds, so the size limit is a ceiling, not a promise. Split big documents into chapters.
• Scans are another job. Text locked inside a picture of a page needs the JPG to Word converter, which accepts a JPEG scan.
• Formats. To convert an md file to Word, upload it as .md, .markdown or .txt, and a .docx comes out. The older .doc format is not offered.

If a Conversion Stalls, Fails or Comes Back Empty

Find your symptom, then the fix.

• Nothing seems to happen. The conversion runs inside that page load and can take up to 60 seconds before it fails, so wait the full minute, then try less.
• The page says it could not convert. "We could not convert this document. Please check the file and try again." covers every failure. In our test an unquoted colon in a front matter title caused it, and quoting it fixed it. Otherwise convert half the document to find the failing block. Pasted text stays in the box, a chosen file does not.
• The tab sat open for hours. Press Convert to Word (DOCX) again; a stale tab still converted in Chromium, the one browser we tried. A script gets "Your session expired for security reasons. Please try again." with pasted text restored, but a chosen file must be picked again.
• The result or your text is gone. A reload after the result asks to resubmit or shows an empty form, so download first. More than 400,000 pasted characters brings back the length message and an empty box, so keep your own copy.
• A blank or error page right after you convert. That can happen if the site restarts or updates at that moment. Nothing is queued behind the request, so convert again, and keep your .md until the Word file opens.

Pandoc Markdown to DOCX on Your Own Computer

A local run adds what a web form cannot: the reference-doc option for your own Word reference document, the toc option for a table of contents, and batch conversion in a shell loop. We ran both options with Pandoc 3.10.2. Check your version: Pandoc 2.9 writes an empty table grid, which can make Word show only the first column.
