Does Rotating a PDF Change the File? Lossless and Permanent

The PDF specification gives each page in the page tree a /Rotate value in multiples of 90, and our tool writes 0, 90, 180 or 270. Our script changes only that page orientation through pikepdf, as its pikepdf page documentation describes. Each content stream stayed byte-identical in our test and the MediaBox did not move. The turn lives in the file, so it is permanent. pikepdf wraps qpdf, covered in its qpdf command line reference. The file is re-saved, so size shifts.

Limits and What Happens to Your File

  • Size. 60 MB without an account, 500 MB with a free one. Shrink with the PDF compressor.
  • Passwords. Type it in the uploader. The copy comes back unprotected, so use the lock PDF tool again.
  • Retention. The upload is deleted when the job ends. The result stays at a random link for two hours.

The file is re-saved and a small SEO Site Checker note is added to its metadata, so size can shift a little. Pages are not re-compressed. In our test a 2.4 KB file grew to 3.5 KB because the structure and metadata were rewritten, while page content stayed untouched.

Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?

Yes, enter the password in the uploader, and a wrong one is refused with a clear message. The rotated copy is saved without a password, so lock it again with the lock PDF tool before you share it if it must stay protected.

Is it safe to upload my PDF, and how long do you keep it?

The file travels over https and is rotated on our server. The upload is deleted when the job ends and the result after about two hours. The link is long and random, but anyone who has it can open the file until then.
