A missing page is caught first: "Page 9 does not exist, this PDF has 8 pages." and a range that runs backwards says "The range 5-3 runs backwards, write it as 3-5." Keep the list to 200 characters or fewer.

What the New PDF Keeps and What It Loses

To extract pages from PDF files, we copy them with pikepdf, built on qpdf, not redrawing them, so selectable text and page size survived our tests. The catch is how a PDF file is built: the document outline and document properties sit outside the page tree and are not carried over.

  • Bookmarks are gone. Our test file lost all 3, and bookmarks in PDF documents let readers jump to a chapter.
